CFTB Announces New Grant From the Reading Resource Fund
November 7, 2016
Press Release: Computers for the Blind (CFTB) is pleased to announce a substantial grant from the Reading Resource fund, Communities Foundation of Texas to provide almost 700 computers to persons on SSDI and/or SSI as well as families of children with visual impairments. Please share widely with staff and consumer organizations, and parents of children with visual impairments and their support groups such as NAPVI and statewide chapters of NAPVI. 1. Consumers who are on SSDI and/or SSI can receive a desktop computer package (desktop computer, flat screen monitor, and peripherals') for $50 or a laptop for $70. Award letter from SSA required. 2. Parents of a child with a visual impairment may receive a desktop computer package (desktop computer, flat screen monitor, and peripherals') for $50 or a laptop for $70. A letter of recommendation from the student's Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) is required. The letter needs to indicate that obtaining a computer at our standard price of $110 would create a financial burden on the family. No other financial information needed. The TVI also needs to indicate that the student needs a computer and is capable of benefiting from the computer. Note: We have discovered that a child who can press the space bar may be able use a computer with proper training, special software, and USB connections. "The Reading Resource Fund at the Communities Foundation of Texas is privileged to be a CFTB partner in supporting those who are blind or have limited vision," said Monica Egert Smith, Chief Relationship Officer at Communities Foundation of Texas. "The refurbished computers and tailored computer programs are vital to increasing access and skills of those with vision impairment. We believe that CFTB has grown their capacity and enhanced their programming to meet this significant gap in the community and look forward to their continued leadership in the field." Communities Foundation of Texas works with families, companies and nonprofits to strengthen our community through a variety of charitable funds and strategic grant making initiatives. The Reading Resource Fund at Communities Foundation of Texas was established in 2015 to continue promoting the mission of Reading & Radio Resource, a nonprofit that provided audio access to printed material for those with blindness and for individuals with barriers to reading. Their transition to the Reading Resource Fund has enabled them to remain committed to leveraging technology to enhance the lives, education and careers of individuals who experience barriers to reading. Communities Foundation of Texas is committed to serving and understanding donor needs, expertly handling complex gifts, wisely managing charitable funds, and leveraging its community knowledge to increase charitable impact.
